The Cup Match Cricket Festival: An Island-Wide Celebration
The Cup Match Cricket Festival, one of Bermuda’s largest annual events, will take place this year on Thursday, August 3, and Friday, August 4. The Cup Match dates back to the abolition of slavery on the island. As part of the original celebrations for this momentous occasion, two cricket teams, St. George and Somerset, came together from opposite sides of the island for a friendly game. Today, the rivalry is more heated, and the festivities have expanded into an island-wide celebration of all things Bermudan. During the match, be sure to enjoy the fruity rum swizzle, a staple of the holiday, as well as the delicious mussel pies cooked up at Dolly Pitcher’s famous seafood stall. You don’t need to purchase tickets to the game ahead of time. Just show up. There’ll be plenty of spots available. In fact, as a visitor to the island, you’ll be offered a seat in a special section, and you’ll likely be given some free drinks as well.
