America's Cup World Series Heads to Bermuda
The winds are shifting toward Bermuda as the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series makes its way to the island. The highest ranking sailors from every nation will begin competing in preliminary rounds across the world beginning this July, including the October preliminary in Bermuda, to secure a spot in the 2017 America's Cup also to be held in Bermuda.
This upcoming fall, October 16-18th to be exact, will mark the time for Bermuda to hold the America's Cup World Series. The America's Cup event is a sailing race event that features some of the highest ranked sailors in the world that race to win the America's Cup trophy. The racing event not only tests the skills of competing sailors but that of the boat and sail design as well.
Yacht Clubs from around the world will compete to take hold of the America's Cup trophy through the various preliminary races that are to be held in:
- Portsmouth, Great Britain - July 23-26, 2015
- Gothenburg, Sweden - August 28-30, 2015
- Hamilton, Bermuda - October 16-18, 2015
The final stage of the America's Cup World Series is slated to be in Bermuda in 2017. Bermuda is expected to host the 35th Cup in which, Oracle Team USA from the Golden Gate Yacht Club will defend their title.
So, what does this mean for Bermuda? Well, given the amazing central location, weather conditions, and reputation for outstanding hospitality, it makes a wonderful choice for the racing event to be held. Harvey Schiller, the commercial commissioner for the 35th Cup states that Bermuda, "(is) a good fit for us."
